Potty talk

Filed under: Katherine — Christy at 11:27 pm on Monday, June 4, 2007

In the past week I have stumbled across a few blogs about EC, Elimination Communication, or Infant Potty Training. Hmmm, I have read about this before and thought it was a little weird. Basically it is trying to go no diapers from the beginning, teaching your baby to hold it until the parent holds the baby over the desired location. Then I was at the library looking for a book about health and you know how the non-fiction section is - random. Anyway, I saw a book on early potty training. I checked it out. It is really interesting.

Did you know that until the 1940’s most kids were trained to “go” on cue by about 4 months. Then the automatic washing machine came out meaning that parents no longer had to hand wash cloth diapers. Dr. Spock wrote his child rearing book and was criticized for his recommendation to delay potty training until a child was older and more ready - 7 to 9 months. That seems absurd to us now. In 1961 the disposable diaper was introduced. Another pediatric heavy weight, Terry Brazelton, was brought on board to promote pampers and he now recommended that parents wait until the kid is ready and they initiate potty training. That means that now the average age of potty training is 33 months for girls and 39 months for boys. Pampers got a great deal out of that. 70 years ago kids used only a few diapers a day and were out of them really early and now they are in them for a long time.

I could go on about all the things I have learned in only the first three chapters of this book. Very fascinating bedtime reading.

Well, I had been thinking for awhile that I needed to buy a toddler toilet for Katherine’s bathroom just so she would get used to it. I thought she might sit there for fun. I did my research and bought the Baby Bjorn Potty Chair. Last night I put her on it, fully clothed and she was not crazy about it. Today, when she woke up from her nap, she was dry (a sign of toilet training readiness) and so I put her on it clothed and she was curious. She climbed on and off, on and off. When I took off her diaper, she hopped off and immediately peed on the carpet of the bathroom. Luckily, we are having the carpet removed and installing tile tomorrow anyway so I did not worry too much. I continued to let her go without a diaper for awhile, closed up in the bathroom with me and a few books. Then I could tell she needed to go #2 so I put her on the potty and she was successful. I could barely believe it. Then before bed she went #1 in the potty.

When I told Sam, he said he was astonished that we were already at that phase. I know that two successful times is no where near being potty trained. That is quite a ways off. But, it does show me that I am not silly for trying and with some effort I may actually get a break in doing cloth diaper laundy before I start over with another kiddo some day.

I thought I would share a picture, but I have to be tasteful so the only picture that was taken was of her playing while still fully clothed.

I CANNOT believe that she pooped in the potty! Way to go! I bet she’ll potty train so fast! Good job Mom!

Congratulations! We tried EC for a couple weeks after Micah was born. It was too hard with an infant and I felt like I was too eager for things to work, so we put our Bjorn potty away. Silas likes to get it out and sit on it and play with his “potty toys” while Joel or I are in the bathroom but we decided to not push it until we’re too tired of washing diapers.

Soooo impressed! You’ve got to tell me more about what you learn from that book. Dax is so waffly about the toilet, some days great others no way - but never #2 potty. Way to go Katherine!

Alice I had no idea you tried EC though I knew you were using cloth. Maybe now that Micah is older you can try it again. Or, wait until Silas is ready and try to train them at the same time.

Erin, I think I timed the #2 very well. She was going in teh next 30 seconds whether or not I had put her on the toilet. If it had taken any time I am sure she would not have sat there long enough to go.

Great! I started putting Trey on the potty when he was 6 months old. I hadn’t planned to do that, but that night I had undressed him and was taking him to the bath and I knew he was about to go, so I just put him on the potty and he went! Soon after that we potty a smaller seat for him to make it easier. We haven’t really pushed for him to be fully trained, but now he does usually wake up from naps dry and then will go #1 and/or #2 on the potty very quickly! I would say he almost always goes when we put him on it.

Wow - you are so brave for posting about EC on your blog. People are going to start thinking that you’re weird or something. (he-he)

I am weird and you started it! If it weren’t for my crunchy sister in law I would have never thought to do things like use cloth diapers or wear a baby in a sling. Crunch on!

Great post. It’s interesting to hear the “history” of potty training.

We Ec w/ our 6 month old. Started when he was about 4 months. Works great. This morning hes gone twice on cue (poo). No poopie diapers, yay! we use all cloth diapers 2.. so any time we can avoid a mess is wonderful! lol

We have the same potty you have except its the Baby Bjorn LITTLE potty.. same concept just a little smaller :-)

Good post, lots of neat info.
